Student: David O’Leary
Building Skills, Careers, and Success
In British Columbia, where a housing affordability crisis is exacerbated by a shortage of skilled trades workers, David’s journey stands out, showcasing the value of specialized training programs.
David, transitioning from a different industry, enrolled in the Building Supply Technical Training (BSTT) program, offered by the Building Supply Industry Association of BC and delivered by the Northwest Skills Institute.
The program’s comprehensive curriculum, spanning eight weeks of intensive training and an additional session focused on employment support services, provided David with the essential skills required in the building supply industry. A crucial element of his training was a hands-on project where he and his classmates collaborated to construct a mini-corner bathroom, refining his abilities in woodworking, drywall, plumbing, electrical installations, and painting.
Skills and Understanding Within the Industry
Following the completion of his training, David quickly secured a job at Windsor Plywood in Vancouver. His potential employer was highly impressed by the depth of understanding and skill application demonstrated during his interview. This led to an immediate job offer as a Sales Associate, with a starting wage of $21.50 per hour.
David’s successful transition into the building supply field was not solely the result of his training; the employment support services provided by the program, including resume writing and job placement, were instrumental in linking him with his future employer. This approach plays a crucial role in ensuring that graduates are not only well-trained but also well-placed within the industry.
This training program has shown and taught me valuable skills and understanding in the building supply industry, helping me transition easier from a different industry I used to.
